As part of the RDEK's regular operations, it is in the process of reviewing its Operational Certificate (OC) for the Central Subregion Landfill. The OC specifies the operating requirements for the landfill and the RDEK has applied for an amendment to the current Certificate.

The amended OC would:

  • allow for an increase in the allowable from 35,000 to 50,000 tonnes per year
  • specify additional requirements for leachate, landfill gas and stormwater management, and
  • generally update the authorization to more closely conform to current ministry landfill criteria.

There is no increase in the size of the existing landfill site being proposed. The amendments reflect an update of operational policies and are in accordance with the approved RDEK Solid Waste Management Plan.

A copy of the draft amended operational certificate and public notice can be found on this page under the Documents section.
