The purpose of the RDEK’s Fairmont Creek Debris Flow Hazard and Risk Assessment Update and Mitigation Options project is to:
- Provide updated hazard and risk mapping that considers recent debris events and mitigation infrastructure that has been constructed since 2013; and
- Provide options for future debris flow mitigation projects on Fairmont Creek to continue to reduce the debris flow risk in the community.
The project is 100% grant-funded through the Union of BC Municipalities Community Emergency Preparedness Disaster Risk Reduction – Climate Adaptation Fund.
Latest Project Update - October 28, 2025
The RDEK has received the final report from BGC Engineering. The report includes updated return periods and event volumes, and updated risk mapping. Some options for future mitigation are suggested in the report, along with very high-level cost estimates.
This mapping, along with the updated post-mitigation mapping for Cold Spring Creek, provides the baseline information on the current level of risk in the community and is referenced in the Fairmont Hot Springs Hazard Guidance Project Report.
Community Information Meeting
A community information meeting will be held via Zoom on Tuesday, November 18, at 7:00 pm. The Guidance Report will be available online from October 31. A link to the meeting and an opportunity to provide questions in advance of the meeting are available on the Fairmont Debris Mitigation Project page.
If you would like to submit a question in advance of the meeting, you can submit it via the comment form on the Fairmont Debris Mitigation Project page.
