The RDEK Board has recognized the importance of providing alternative methods of transportation that is accessible to everyone and as a result the development of an Active Transportation Plan for the Columbia Valley was identified as a strategic priority.

The Active Transportation Plan for the Columbia Valley will provide strategic direction for an active transportation network to connect the region to municipalities and other community facilities.

Where we are now:
  • We are currently working on completing a DRAFT Plan
Next steps:
  • The Draft will be shared with the Technical Review Committee (Fall 2024)
  • There will be public consultation / engagement to share the draft with the public and gather feedback (late fall 2024/early winter 2025)
Public Consultation:

Public consultation will be extremely important throughout the planning process as residents have the most knowledge on how current trails are functioning and what areas need the most improvement.

Public engagement will be ongoing throughout the planning process. A Technical Review Committee has been established with community members, First Nations, and governing bodies. A draft plan will be created through consideration of baseline conditions, and input heard from the public, and finalized after further public and stakeholder engagement.

Active transportation refers to any form of human-powered transportation, including walking, cycling, or rolling using a skateboard, in-line skates, wheelchair or other wheel-based forms of human-powered transportation.

Investments in active transportation can result in a more balanced transportation system that is accessible, cost-effective, and more equitable. There are also significant quality of life, health, safety, and economic benefits associated with investing in active transportation.

To identify potential connections and development of a key trail corridor or ‘spine’ to traverse the Columbia Valley for a cohesive active transportation network.

Opportunities will be identified for smaller communities to enhance their own points of access to the regional trail system and connecting communities to surrounding municipalities and community facilities will be a priority. Trail development standards and funding options will be explored.
